Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance launches June 14 on PS5 and PS4 – full details on enhanced gameplay https://ift.tt/cGN8nq1

Hello, I’m Shigeo Komori, the Game Director at Atlus and we are excited to bring Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance to PlayStation fans. In celebration of today’s new trailer, I want to share more details about the game ahead of its June 14 launch on PS5 and PS4.

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance launches June 14 on PS5 and PS4 – full details on enhanced gameplay

Battle system

SMT V: Vengeance introduces a multitude of new skills across 270 new and familiar demons, including powerful new Magatsuhi Skills. These unison skills are unlocked after receiving a new kind of talisman called a periapt, which states the skill and demons required to use it. Gather these demons as your allies to command the tactical advantage in battle: unleash fearsome attacks, improve your chances with support skills, or bestow life-saving healing effects on your team.

More powerful skills mean more powerful foes – explore the apocalyptic netherworld known as Da’at and encounter glowing red enemies called Magatsuhi demons. These enemies are stronger than your typical demon and will hunt you down if you’re not careful! Emerge victorious and you will be rewarded with higher amounts of Macca, EXP, and even stat-boosting Incense. Be on your guard, as unlike normal enemy encounters these demons will wield fierce Magatsuhi Skills.

As a reward for our devoted fans, when certain conditions have been met the level cap will be increased from 99 to 150. Additionally, upon completing specific tasks the game will unlock the punishing Godborn difficulty mode, with all enemy demons now level 150 – a challenge that will test the prowess of even the most hardened SMT veteran.

The battle system has also received various updates and adjustments, such as being able to use magic skills during auto-battle. These system updates and new elements will be applied to Canon of Vengeance and Canon of Creation.

New demon experiences

Players can now take control of an individual demon during special side quests. During these quests the player will guide the actions of a demon, such as fan-favorites Alice and Pixie, as well as new characters like Nahobeeho, to complete a variety of non-combat tasks around various locations throughout the game. These quests give players a better understanding of an area by using each demon’s particular skills for exploration and allow players to spend more time with their favorite demons. They also allow players to better understand demons and their personalities, especially their thoughts about humans. Upon the quest’s completion, the demon may become your new Demon Navigator!

SMT V: Vengeance also adds more ways to interact with demons through a new feature called Demon Haunts. Here the player can enjoy special conversations with demons, friends, and even Aogami to improve the Nahobino’s abilities. Receive new rewards and level up through conversations, and even take a nostalgic picture of your favorite demon or ally with the free camera mode (available only in Demon Haunts). Talking with your demon party members will increase their stats as well, so be sure to return to these safe areas to chat often and create an unstoppable team!

Greater field exploration

Map exploration has been enhanced by including elements like Magatsuhi for fast travel, a sky view for a wider look around the area, and a full map view unobstructed by the Abscesses that previously blocked the path. Magatsuhi Rails provide shortcuts and open more areas to explore compared to the original, including secret locations that can only be discovered via rail travel. The Canon of Vengeance storyline includes entirely new locations in Da’at, and we hope players feel a sense of wonder as they explore the vast Shinjuku Ward and mysterious dungeon Shakan.

Traversing Da’at is never a chore with a Quest Navigator by your side, and with a greatly increased number of friendly allies we know you’ll find the perfect companion to accompany you on your epic journey. Netherworld investigation is also even easier with the addition of two support features for Quest Navigators: they now leave a vapor trail to track their movements, and stopping points will emit a pillar of light from the spot where they are first discovered. Reading the map is also easier with additional unique icons and quest markers.

New accessibility features

There have been dozens of small updates and revisions to make things more interesting and accessible, such as the increased pick-up range of relics, the ability to read tutorials at any point, gaining the initiative even after enemy detection by striking them from behind, reduced ambushes from aerial enemies, an increase in the number of Miracles (which have various positive effects), and the further enhancement and variety of actions for demon encounters.

Lastly, there are two big changes from the previous game: the ability to save anywhere on the map rather than the limited leyline founts, and Estoma, a shield to avoid enemy encounters has been updated from a skill to a Miracle, allowing the player to spend Magatsuhi instead of MP, freeing up a valuable skill slot.

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance launches June 14 on PS5 and PS4. I hope you enjoy the game!

Skydance’s Behemoth hands-on report

Skydance’s Behemoth hands-on report

Skydance’s Behemoth hands-on report https://ift.tt/TpSGYej

Even back when they were herd-deep in undead, the creators behind The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners were dreaming up how – and where – else they could apply the immersive tactility of their VR combat. At the tail end of 2022 came the answer in the form of a cinematic teaser: sidearms would be exchanged for swords and dangerous encounters transposed from a Walker-infested New Orleans to a brutal, dark fantasy world.

And last week, a gameplay debut by way of the latest State of Play. At the initial announcement, the cornerstones promised for this Unreal 5-powered adventure – physics-based combat, a grappling hook to climb and grab, and boss battles with earth-shaking titans – all present in nearly two minutes of PS VR2 footage.

There’s plenty in that first-look sizzle that I experienced first-hand by way of a recent hands-on. Thirty minutes and change were spent going toe-to-toe with skilled fighters, repelling down mountainous ruins, and clambering up the torso of an angry, monstrous behemoth in a “vertical slice of a vertical slice” demoing the game’s key features.

Favoring dual-wield loadouts and two-handed broadswords throughout, I walked away feeling every inch an ancient warrior but equally glad to have donned a lightweight shirt that morning and had a few weeks of a gym return under my belt.

You don’t have to fear a forced workout. The studio intends to craft difficulty settings that cater to and scale for all players, be they story and lore lovers, power fantasy seekers, or survival enthusiasts. But even in this preview, the intricacy of combat is a gritty delight. The core of the physics-based melee system requires blades or shields to be angled correctly to strike limbs and block incoming blows, thrown daggers, arrows. There’s a tight parry window to stagger enemies and unblockable attacks that your dodge move will come in handy for.

The studio is still developing the game’s haptic feedback to make use of PS VR2’s headset and Sense controllers. The intent is for every weapon to have its weight and heft, and for the player to ‘feel’ the passing of Behemoths. One fun illustrative example: when you run out of stamina, the headset feedback will mimic throbbing temples until stamina automatically recharges.

How to pierce a fighter’s defenses depends on their weapon – and yours. Daggers will only scratch wooden shields, small axes will puncture holes in them, and two-handed broadswords – with the right angle and force – will carve chunks off them. Headshot a faraway foe with an arrow shot, or toss a melee weapon, and then charge in to finish the job. Aim a strike or weapon throw correctly, and you can knock a helmet off an armored foe’s head.

Your grappling hook is an essential tool for fights. Grab distant weapons, and yank a combatant off balance. Rappel out of trouble, or reposition yourself on the battlefield. In one moment, I snag a tree trunk behind someone and with a quick pull it cannons into them. In another, I fast-rappel up a ledge, the hook’s pull launching me upwards (the subsequent smooth arc of my grapple-assisted leap not losing its sheen during my playthrough), and as my feet touch higher ground, I notch and fire an arrow at a bowman lurking nearby.

Combat is intense throughout. Don’t expect hordes (or herds) of enemies, but every individual is a tangible threat at close range. All equip themselves from the same pool of weapons you’ll ultimately have full access to, and have much the same skill sets as you. Thus, most encounters hinge on situational awareness, positional strategy, weapon consideration, and player resilience.

There’s another addition to that list: superhuman strength. For you, at least, the curse that’s infected much of the Forsaken Land’s populace is a boon. A limited-time but automatically-recharging buff that, when activated, lets you hulk out and smash down doors, perform brutal, superpowered finishers, or send would-be killers – or their limbs – flying. It further evens the odds when surrounded or when dueling tougher enemy types.

The clash of steel doesn’t wholly define your journey: the game rewards exploration. Explore your surroundings to grab items (which can be concocted into healing potions and other items at crafting stations) and stray off the beaten path to discover collectibles. Place your hands upon indentations on stone altars to save your progress and cleanse your arms of the blood of the fallen – your sword, however, continues to carry the stains of where you’ve been.

You’ll never be without weapons. The Forsaken Lands’ brutal history is laid bare in its landscape. Armaments lie abandoned or dropped by the dozens. The pierced, skeletal remains of those who once wielded them litter the world, and those still with a pulse can be looted once they join their deceased brethren. You can sheath extra blades, shields, and bows upon your person to switch up strategies on the fly.

You’ll earn ‘hero’ weapons which will always be upon you (rematerializing if you leave them behind on your travels). Once discovered, a handy forge lets you enhance your arsenal with different properties, stats, and damage types. You’ll also be able to add cosmetic flourishes earned through besting the worst the Forsaken Lands throw at you. Downed Behemoths will grant buffs to your strength (health) and stamina.

Behemoths, plural. As per the State of Play trailer sting, there’s more than one out there. But one is what I face at the demo’s end. After the previous half hour teasing its presence, either spotted as a moving mountain in the far distance or wandering down a valley newly carved out by its passing, I step out into a snow-ravaged tundra for a battle that ties together everything I’ve learned in the past 30 minutes.

I dodge mammoth foot stomps, and a building-sized wrecking ball swung with impunity. Armor encasing its feet are grappled and prised off, requiring multiple hands-over-hand pulls to remove it and allow me to ascend onto the beast’s side. Climbing up a rampaging colossus towards an attackable weak point isn’t unfamiliar; doing so in the first person is. Feet back on terra firma and Behemoth downed temporarily, I’m jumped by a squad of humanoid attackers, and we clash in the shadow of a cliff-sized arm. Muscle memory is weak enough that I’m eventually overwhelmed, even after swigs of the revitalizing health potions I snatch off my belt. The Behemoth regains its footing. I’m briefly eclipsed as one mammoth foot descends one last, fatal time.

It’s an epic end to an epic fight, one I’m readying for a second round of when the game launches on PS VR2 this fall. The creators of Skydance’s Behemoth have taken the best learnings of their previous work and are intent on building something special.

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree hands-on report

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree hands-on report

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree hands-on report https://ift.tt/Dq4C9QW

The Land of Shadow is calling.

After a more-than-two-year wait, we’re weeks away from the launch of Shadow of the Erdtree, the enormous DLC for Elden Ring. FromSoftware hasn’t spent those years basking the accolades their first open-world adventure received; instead, they’ve been hard at work on this, their biggest and most ambitious expansion ever.

When I recently got a chance to go hands-on with Shadow of the Erdtree, even the tiny slice I saw made it easy to remember why Elden Ring is so beloved. Rise, Tarnished, and hear of the things I saw.

We’re not in Limgrave anymore

Shadow of the Erdtree takes place in an entirely new region, known as the Land of Shadow, and is accessed by touching the mummified arm found in Mohgwyn Palace in the base game. It’s here that Miquella, the oft-mentioned but never-seen character from the main game, traveled to in the game’s lore.

The section I explored opened with a sprawling meadow filled with gravestones and shadowy spirits. In the distance, I could clearly see what lay ahead of me: a vast settlement, an expansive castle, and a dark woodland looming on the horizon. Above all, an enormous tree stood, charred and gnarled, in stark contrast to the golden tree seen across the main game’s landscape.

While regions in the original game often glowed with autumnal warmth, this region’s dried grass and dying shrubs felt ancient and blighted. The dungeon and fortress I explored—Belurat Tower Settlement and Castle Ensis—were claustrophobic and folded over on themselves. They were filled with winding paths and concealed shortcuts, opening to reveal routes back to Sites of Grace. I fought through flooded cellars, lava-filled chasms, and forests alive with an eerie blue glow.

Fresh yet familiar, The Land of Shadow feels like a natural extension to The Lands Between, and FromSoftware’s mastery of level design is displayed here in glorious form.

New opponents await

It wouldn’t be a FromSoftware update without fresh foes to face, and in that regard, Shadow of the Erdtree comes out swinging. The first enemy I faced dove down to attack me from atop a pillar and quickly sent me back to the Site of Grace. After that, I faced hatchet-wielding ghosts, death sorcery-breathing birds, and knights more lethal than anything I had encountered before. Gigantic, flaming brazier-like beasts flung brimstone in my direction mere moments after I started my journey, setting the scene for the rest of my time there.

And then there are bosses. Shadow of the Erdtee will feature 10+ full bosses and additional side bosses. Some are required to progress the story, and others can be challenged when you feel up to it.

I faced two of these. The first, the Devine Beast Dancing Lion, is found in Belurat Tower Settlement and felt like that classic FromSoftware early game skill check. The grotesque beast leaped across the arena to attack, using a mixture of elemental abilities to keep me on my toes before crushing my poor sorcerer between its teeth again and again.

The second was the magic-wielding Twin Moon Knight, one of the guardians of Castle Ensis, who used a distinctive double full moon attack that filled the entire arena with magic blasts. This devastating ability was challenging to avoid and threw me into the air before slamming me back down to earth, often with lethal force. And if the double moon doesn’t get you, their one-two combo of pyro and glintstone-infused blades will.

One consistent thing between every enemy I faced was their speed and agility. Without exception, the inhabitants of the Land of Shadow felt lethal even from a distance due to their ability to sprint, leap, and spin through the air to reach me. Enemies move fast. It’s hard to say if this is unique to the area I explored, but players should be prepared to get very familiar with that dodge button.

Rebuild your armory

Shadow of the Erdtree will introduce around one hundred new weapons for players to discover. From the start, I chose a Greatsword-sized katana, which caused fire damage when it made contact, and a battle shield featuring large metal spikes on the edge, turning this protective item into an offensive tool.

Players can also discover eight brand-new weapon types. The details on many of these types were being kept under wraps for now, but I was given access to one: Martial Arts.

This new category allowed me to go into combat bare-handed, swinging heavy punches and slamming kicks into my opponents. Just like other weapon types, Martial Arts can be assigned a Skill to suit your playstyle, and mine saw me taking a leaf from some of the bosses’ books by leaping through the air and landing a flurry of kicks on my enemies.

Fighting barehanded might seem like madness in this kind of world, but I found it remarkably effective. The blunt impact of the blows made it easier to break enemies’ stance, leaving them open to a quick and deadly finisher. Martial Arts was a joy to use, and if the other new categories are even half as fun to play with, Tarnished are in for a treat with the new weapon types.

Bolster yourself with Grace

Shadow of the Erdtree introduces a new system, called Shadow Realm Blessing, to help level the playing field a little. Intrepid explorers are offered the chance to find and use a new consumable to apply a stackable buff that negates some incoming damage and increases the damage you cause to opponents in the Land of Shadow.

This consumable, Scadutree Fragments, are rare, but can be found littered across the world if you look carefully enough. Useable only at Sites of Grace, the amount needed for the next level of buff increases after each use, but seeking them out could make your journey slightly less harrowing. Of course, if you prefer a tougher challenge, the use of the Scadutree Fragments is entirely optional, and the buff has no effect outside of the Land of Shadow.

Shadow of the Erdtree is shaping up to be a worthy expansion to FromSoftware’s now-legendary adventure. If you’ve been away from Elden Ring for some time, jumping into this new region will feel comfortingly familiar, but even for veterans, there is plenty to uncover.

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree launches on June 21 for PS5 and PS4, and requires the Elden Ring base game to play.

V Rising devs deep drive into boss encounters, coming to PS5 June 11

V Rising devs deep drive into boss encounters, coming to PS5 June 11 https://ift.tt/wAlrnbW

In V Rising, you take the role of a Vampire freshly awoken from their dusty tomb, and your power has long since dried up. It’s time to get it back, and what else could that mean other than a blood-soaked adventure to drink your fill and find your footing once more as a nocturnal terror of the night.

Enter the V Blood. These people, monsters, beasts, and supernatural wonders are all descendants of powerful bloodlines. This magically enhanced blood proves a potent source of advancement for the Vampire, master hemomancer, to tap to absorb skills, knowledge, and even magical secrets to learn spells and abilities.

These boss-level encounters are numerous but notable. In this blog, we’ll give you a few examples of what you’ll have to face off against, and for those sinister strategists among you, we’ll offer a few tips to take advantage of.

Willfred The Village Elder

Willfred is the chief of a small, secluded village, its reclusive population hiding a terrible secret. Visiting this place during the day, you might notice strange details, such as scratched surfaces and empty cages. Only by returning at the right time will you uncover this place’s dark, twisted nature, and come face to face with a hunger for blood that might match even your own.

The Village Elder is the alpha of his pack, and the most vicious hunter you’ll encounter among his fellow werewolves. He’ll relentlessly chase you down with an onslaught of clawing and biting attacks. Bringing some defensive countermeasures in your spell kit will be of great help, and you should take special care to hold your dash ability to slip away during only the most critical moments. Toward the end of the fight, captive villagers will break free from their cages and try to escape. Willfred will switch his attention, going into a compulsive feeding frenzy. You should get to them before he does because you won’t like what happens after he feeds.

Ziva the Engineer

In the depths of Gloomrot, a gothic hellscape riddled with toxic waste and mutations born of the ambitions of mankind’s pursuit of higher evolution, you can find Ziva the Engineer. She’s the crazed head engineer of weapons development for the tech-savvy faction, the Trancendum. When facing off against her, it’s vital to learn the attack patterns of her three weapons, an experimental arsenal that demands respect if you don’t want to meet an early undead end.

She swaps regularly between her weapons during the fight, switching up her move set as she does. When she grabs her Electro Zapper, you’ll need to stay on your toes and keep moving. Her flamethrower is a deadly countermeasure to be feared like the sun, so you’ll want to keep your distance when she’s equipped with this one. Lastly, her Gatling gun will fill the battlefield with bullets, and you’ll need to find some cover to survive the onslaught.

Raziel the Shepherd

The Church of Luminance is the dominant force of power in Vardoran, and their adherence to and worship of the Light are rooted deep in the history of mankind. It was the Light that felled Dracula and drove Vampire kind into hiding centuries ago, and a challenge you’ll need to overcome if you have any hope of rising to greatness.

Raziel’s monastery is teeming with divine energies, burning away at any unprepared Vampire daring to set foot on the sacred ground. Brewing a concoction to give temporary resistance against holy powers will help protect you from the natural energies of the area, but also provide some layer of protection against his abilities.

Prepare for a menagerie of holy spells from this caster-type enemy, as he’ll rain down projectiles, area attacks, and sustained beams of light that you’ll need to avoid to survive the encounter. The beacons of holy light he’ll summon will make this more difficult, making it more challenging to move around unhindered. Destroy these beacons to free up space so you have room to dodge safely!

Talzur the Winged Horror

This is one of the end-game bosses of V Rising and very likely a necessary step to empowering yourself enough to face Dracula. A horrific beast and one of Dracula’s favorite pets, it has been horribly deformed and empowered by the favor of the Immortal King.

The massive size of the Winged Horror makes fighting it in melee a dangerous proposition. However, Talzur is no simple beast. It summons chilling frost to trap its victims and spews chaos fire to those unfortunate enough not to escape in time. Portions of the battlefield will continuously be set ablaze, so you’ll have to tread carefully and save your abilities to avoid being knocked back into one of the fire pits.

This is one of the longer fights in the game, an intense combat where any misstep could see you mauled for a single slip-up. Beware the Winged Horror.

V Rising will be released on June 11 for PlayStation 5. Pre-order a bundle to get five days of early access.

Dynasty Warriors: Origins revealed for PS5, out 2025

Dynasty Warriors: Origins revealed for PS5, out 2025

Dynasty Warriors: Origins revealed for PS5, out 2025   https://ift.tt/p3NTuHn

When the original Dynasty Warriors debuted back in 1997, little did we know that 27 years later Koei Tecmo would be introducing an electrifying new entry into the series, ready to deliver Dynasty Warriors to the next generation of action gamers.

Dynasty Warriors: Origins unleashes the largest armies ever seen in the series while also introducing a new hero to the exhilarating 1 vs. 1,000 action that made the franchise famous. But before I go any further, please take a look at the announcement trailer.

Dynasty Warriors: Origins revealed for PS5, out 2025

Dynasty Warriors: Origins is being developed by the fantastic team at Omega Force, a team that is poised for a fresh start with this game (complete with new logo), and we’re out to prove with Origins that we are not only going back to our hack and slash roots with the type of action our fans crave, but we are here to redefine expectations! I am certain that in this game, we will deliver a most excellent experience that we were not able to accomplish in the series until now, carving out a new history for both Dynasty Warriors and Omega Force!

Since Dynasty Warriors 2 (the original Dynasty Warriors was a fighting game!), the roots of this series have always been based around the “sense of realism on the battlefield” and “the exhilaration of 1 vs. 1,000” gameplay. In Dynasty Warriors: Origins, we will return to these roots to deliver this non-stop action to not only our most loyal fans of the series, but to all game fans worldwide. In Dynasty Warriors: Origins, we’ve been able amplify the feeling of tension on the battlefield while also being able to deliver the epic sense of exhilaration after overcoming the odds in the most thrilling warfare we’ve ever been able to create.

To achieve this, we’re making the most of the PS5 hardware specs, creating an all-new Warriors-like battlefield where you’re challenged by massive armies as far as the eye can see! With the overwhelming number and scale of enemy armies pushing towards you, you’ll have to act fast and with force if you want to survive. In addition to your own striking power, you’ll need to coordinate with allied armies and enjoy the tactical aspects of gameplay in order to take out the hoard of enemies in our most tension-filled fights to date.

This image shows the nameless hero on horseback, surrounded on all sides by an army, charging towards a castle in the far distance.. This image shows the nameless hero on horseback, following a legion of soldiers as they race through the castle’s interior. Just in front of them, some of the castle’s battlements are crumbling after being the focus of an explosion.

An original protagonist appears

But that’s not all, as for the first time in Dynasty Warriors franchise history, we will depict the chaos of the Three Kingdoms from the eyes of a ‘nameless hero’. Play through the historical tale of war through the eyes of our new protagonist, showcasing the vast land of China and its timeless soldiers and generals like never before!

Stay tuned for more information in the coming months as we reveal more about our new nameless hero and his fight for the Three Kingdoms before Dynasty Warriors: Origins is released in 2025.

This image is a close up portrait of the nameless hero. This image shows the nameless hero leaping into battle, spear ready to thrust down into the legion of enemies that mill around below him.

Gran Turismo 7 update 1.48 features 5 new cars, Café Menu, and World Circuit Events https://ift.tt/LY2WlBc

Update 1.48* for Gran Turismo 7 will be available as of Wednesday, May 29 at 11:00pm PST / May 30 at 7:00am BST / 3:00pm JST.

Gran Turismo 7 update 1.48 features 5 new cars, Café Menu, and World Circuit Events

5 new cars added this month

Honda Civic SiR・II (EG) ’93
(Can be purchased from Used Cars)

The top-grade 5th generation Civic balances speed with comfort.

The Civic, now equipped with a VTEC engine and much faster, passed the baton to the 5th generation model in September of 1991. The body was available in a 3-door hatchback, the newly christened “Ferio” 4-door saloon, and the 5-door shuttle. The car’s tagline called it the “Sports Civic”. Engine variety increased due to the further development of the VTEC system. The base models were equipped with the carbureted 1.3 L and 1.5 L, on top of these were the easy to drive 1.5 L SOHC VTEC and the more fuel efficient 1.5 L VTEC-E.

The top of the line was crowned with SiR model, which featured the high performance 1.6 L DOHC VTEC. All cars used Honda’s new standard double wishbone suspension. The SiR model, which served as the face of the “Sports Civic” boasted 9.9 BHP more power than the previous generation, achieving 167.7 BHP. Also for the suspension, the spring rate, amount of suspension stroke, etc. were revised, and were set to be more sports oriented. As with previous models, the SiR aimed for lower weight through simplified equipment, while the SiR・II featured a full suite of comfort amenities such as automatic air conditioning, power windows, and a genuine leather wrapped steering wheel.

Honda NSX GT500 ’00
(Can be purchased from Legend Cars)

A new design with a lower centre of gravity was the key to victory for this JGTC champion.

During the 2000 All-Japan Grand Touring Car Championship (JGTC), the three big automakers Honda, Toyota and Nissan engaged in an unprecedented war for the GT500-class title. The NSX development team decided on major changes to the 2000 model even going so far as repositioning the transverse mounted engine. Mounting a V-type engine in a transverse layout helps to shorten the length of the vehicle, but the layout creates problems in routing the exhaust pipes coming from the two-cylinder banks. Previously, the NSX’s exhaust pipes had ran under the engine, but the development team decided to re-route them to the sides and lower the engine itself. However, in this configuration the gearbox, which was mounted on the side of the engine, would be in the way. To make space for the exhaust pipes, the team set about redesigning a smaller gearbox. The result was a completely bespoke transmission that employed formula car gears, which are thinner and more compact than regular gears.

Five NSX teams were entered for the 2000 season. Among them, the Castrol Mugen NSX team, along with Takata Dome NSX, took on the role of advanced-development “works cars” inside the NSX camp. The Takata Dome NSX showed overwhelming performance, taking win. However, the unique weight handicaps in the JGTC rules resulted in the team missing out on the championship title. In its shadow emerged the Castrol Mugen NSX, putting in one solid run after another. It was driven by Ryo Michigami and Osamu Nakako, with Nakako being replaced by Hidetoshi Mitsusada halfway through the season. The Castrol Mugen NSX team were able to deftly handle the weight handicaps incurred from its 1st place finishes and went on to glory as the series champion.

Nissan Skyline GTS-R (R31) ’87
(Can be purchased from Used Cars)

An unlikely monster machine born from the elegant lines of the 7th gen. Skyline.

Though it still retained the same sporty appeal of the previous generation R30 model, the 7th generation R31 Skyline marked a change of direction for the line when it was released in August 1985. In the Japanese car scene of the time, there was a growing trend in both the sales and general popularity of luxury outfitted ‘high-society cars’, typically either 4 or 2-door models. In response to this cultural boom, the Skyline was repositioned as a luxury saloon. At its debut, the new model featured a somewhat understated line-up, featuring a 4-door hardtop, a sedan and an estate. Fans would have to wait until May 1986 for the anticipated 2-door coupé.

The real attraction of the 7th generation would show up much later still though. This was the GTS-R, released in August 1987 in a limited run of only 800 cars. The GTS-R was developed to reclaim the Group A racing title and was a very sporty model. The powerplant was based on the turbocharged RB20DET DOHC inline-6 featured in the GTS, which generated 177.5 BHP and 23.0 kgfm of torque. The GTS-R version added a stainless-steel exhaust manifold and a T04E turbocharger, achieving 207.1 BHP and 25.0 kgfm torque. This was a very special engine, earning itself the designation RB20DET-R.

The suspension and exterior were also modified. While the normal GTS-X had an automatic front spoiler that deployed according to vehicle speed, the GTS-R instead used a fixed spoiler, with the rear spoiler also being upgraded to a larger unit. In addition, the car was offered in an exclusive ‘Blue Black’ body colour.

Volvo 240 SE Estate ’93
(Can be purchased from Used Cars)

A historic model which taught the world to love the station wagon.

When people think of Volvo, they think estate cars. And when they think estate cars, they think Volvo. Such was the automobile scene for quite some time until the worldwide SUV boom began gaining momentum in the late 1980’s. One car that cemented this maxim was the 240 Estate.

The 240 series itself had debuted in 1974, made up of the ‘244’ 4-door sedan, ‘242’ 2-door, and ‘245’ 5-door wagon. The 3rd digit of the model number denoted the number of doors. It wasn’t until 1983 that all these models were consolidated into a single ‘240’ model. Additionally, when the car originally debuted it featured round headlights, the iconic square lamps were introduced later in 1979. The 240 retained most of its original styling throughout its production until 1993, though its safety features were kept constantly up to date with additions like airbags and ABS as standard equipment. Even in an era where sedans ruled sales figures, over one third of total production was made up of wagon models, proving just how popular the Estate was in the 240 line-up.One of the most notable features of the 240 Estate was its styling, which appeared square no matter what angle the car was observed from. It features a long front overhang to incorporate crumble zones, and on the rear as well a long overhang facilitates both impact absorption and extra luggage space. This resulted in the car’s characteristically long thin silhouette.

Volvo V40 T5 R-Design ’13
*Can be purchased from Brand Central

The globally successful Volvo that serves as a saloon, estate, and coupe.

The V40 was revealed at the 2012 Geneva show as a C-segment 5-door hatchback. Though it was positioned as Volvo’s entry-level model, the V40 would actually play a huge role in the Volvo catalogue as it served as the combined replacement for 3 different models: the conventional S40 saloon, the V50 family estate, and the sporty C30 3-door hatchback. To create a car that could provide the comfort of a saloon, the utility of an estate and the youthful, sporty styling of a coupe, the car was developed completely from scratch. While the base structure utilized a platform in common with Ford cars, the styling is innovative and has no trace of Volvo’s conservative image of the past. Incorporating design cues from the classic P1800 of the 60’s and its later 1800ES variant, the car has flowing lines and a soulful silhouette that can be interpreted as a coupe or an estate. The car was an immediate hit from its debut, attracting worldwide attention for both its aesthetics and utility, able to comfortably seat 4 adults along with all their luggage. The T5 R-Design is the sportiest model of the series. Its 210.1 BHP 2L inline-5 turbocharged engine provides quick acceleration performance, and its sports suspension and 18-inch wheels provide both sharp handling and a smooth ride. The special front bumper and rear diffuser provide additional aerodynamic performance, as well as giving it a bold look.
