Nioh 3 hands-on report

Nioh 3 hands-on report

Nioh 3 hands-on report https://ift.tt/wxpcAei

The striking thing about Nioh 3, even compared to the first two games, is how many options you have in any given fight. A huge number of weapons, stances, and abilities to create a vast array of fast-paced attacks, and help you survive against devastating, powerful opponents.

Publisher Koei Tecmo recently gave me a chance to go hands-on and explore a new area of Nioh 3, complete with a pair of tough bosses to battle. Here’s everything I found, saw, and fought along the way.

Venturing through a corrupted city and a new time period

Nioh 3 puts you in the role of a Tokugawa Takechiyo, who’s on the precipice of becoming the next shogun of the Sengoku era, before their brother, Tokugawa Kunimatsu, kicks off a civil war to try to take over with an army of soldiers and strange yokai spirits. But Nioh 3 won’t just take you through different physical locations — you’ll travel to different time periods as you explore its expansive “open field” levels, as well. My preview took place in an occupied, corrupted Kyoto in the Bakumatsu period.

Like a lot of things in Nioh 3, the open field approach to its levels feels like a natural expansion of the series’ past ideas. You’ll still often fight and explore your way down paths that loop back on themselves with shortcuts, but levels are much larger, with side paths, hidden areas, and additional objectives — some of which are only accessible with the new jump ability. All that exploration provides players with options; if you run up against a battle that’s too tough, you can try somewhere else, often discovering opportunities to power up your character and earn additional rewards.

Fluid fighting with two styles

With each new Nioh game, developer Team Ninja builds on a foundation of fast-paced action-RPG combat, but Nioh 3 turns a stable structure of cool combat abilities into a glittering tower of options.

As we saw in our Tokyo Games Show hands-on report, at the heart of Nioh 3’s combat is the returning Samurai style and the new Ninja style. The Samurai style is more stalwart and defensive, while the Ninja style is fast and highly agile. You can switch between styles in an instant by hitting R2, making use of each one’s strengths depending on the situation. Using the swap mid-battle, you can quickly and fluidly chain together attacks and abilities from both styles. Executed at the right moment, you’ll feel like a skillful wrecking ball as you pummel an opponent.

The two stances further expand on Nioh’s Guardian Spirit abilities, Soul Cores, and heap of weapons — the number of combat options you have in any given fight is almost overwhelming. Once you get the hang of it all, though, the freedom makes you feel like a ridiculously fast, deadly warrior, chaining all sorts of attacks together in a torrent of blades and blasts of magic.

Deflect blows to gain an advantage

My favorite new addition to Nioh 3’s combat is Deflect, a parry mechanic that charges your Ki and Arts meters when you perfectly time a block by hitting the guard button, L1, as an attack lands. The parry allows you to use quick reflexes to maintain your aggression even against huge bosses and tough foes. With all the other options you have available in combat, it’s a natural addition that rewards you for skillful play.

Helpful haptics

Team Ninja adds to the feel of combat with the DualSense controller’s haptic feedback, emphasizing a lot of its elements. You’ll feel strikes and attack as you deflect or land them, while the adaptive triggers channel elements like drawing back a bow string. However, the developers said they were careful not to overdo it and make haptics distracting, since the game focuses on quick reactions and speedy inputs.

Taking down Takasugi Shinsaku

The tutorial section of the preview culminated in a boss fight against samurai Takasugi Shinsaku. A quick, agile fighter, he frequently switched between powerful, fast sword blows and quickly firing bullets from a revolver. Those shots were matched by projectile attacks from his Guardian Spirit, who fought alongside him throughout the battle.

Agility was the name of the game against Takasugi, whose speed and relentless grab attacks could make it tough to Deflect his strikes. But once I finally overwhelmed him, we became allies, working together to clear the corruption from Kyoto.

Battling through the Crucible

The second half of the level I played emphasized the “open” part of the open field. More paths led me to tough battles against powerful Formidable Foes, enemy bases I could capture if I cleared out all the enemies inside, and hidden areas with additional loot.

My objective was to reach a large central area called a Crucible. These are challenging areas filled with tough yokai, but with a twist: when you take damage while fighting them, you’ll be afflicted with Life Corrosion, which reduces your total health. Defeating enemies can reduce the corrosion, but as I fought through the area to the final boss of the location, I had to fight carefully and manage my health to make sure I wasn’t overwhelmed.

Battling Noribotoke, an enormous yokai boss

The Crucible’s climax was a fight against Noribotoke, a towering statue brought to life by twisting black tendrils. Like in past entries in the series, as I dealt damage to the boss, it would periodically transform and take on new attack patterns and abilities. In Noribotoke’s case, that means splitting the stone statue pieces so that the tendrils can stretch out, expanding the boss’s range and making it much faster and more dangerous.

This battle really highlighted how all the weapons in your arsenal can come together. I spent a lot of time in Samurai form, deflecting attacks and getting in hits to lower Noribotoke’s Ki. Whenever I could deplete it or land a Burst Break counter, I laid into the boss with the Ninja style to deal as much damage as possible before getting clear to avoid the boss’s sweeping attacks. That approach, combined with powerful Guardian Spirit abilities and Soul Core summons I found along the way, eventually brought Noribotoke down and dispelled the Crucible once and for all.

Nioh 3 presents you with a whole lot of combat options to keep track of, and at first, it can be a lot to manage. But by the end of my three-hour preview, all those abilities had come together to make combat in Nioh 3 feel fast, fluid, and powerful, even as I took on some very challenging enemies. Having all those abilities gives you the opportunity to create a fighting style that works for you from a host of options, and constantly rewards you for building up your skills and exploring its larger open world to find ways to enhance them even more.

You can see how Nioh 3’s fighting styles, combat abilities, and open field levels come together for yourself when the game launches on February 6, 2026 for PS5.

Reanimal out Feb 13, 2026 on PS5 https://ift.tt/B6Jxq8f

Hi folks!

My name is Dave Mervik and I am the Narrative Director for Tarsier Studios, creators of the soon-to-be-released co-op horror game Reanimal, which launches on PS5 Feb 13, 2026.

Reanimal out Feb 13, 2026 on PS5

For those of you new to the world of Reanimal, it is a story of a group of orphans bound together by the world they grew up in, and torn apart by what that world became. The Boy and The Girl are your playable characters in this story and they find each other very early on at the beginning of the game. After they’ve said their hellos, they set off in their boat to find and reclaim their missing friends – Hood, Bucket and Bandage – from a variety of unpleasant places and even more unpleasant monsters. It’s fair to say that these kids have a complicated history with this place, so don’t be surprised if they’re a bit nonplussed to see you at first, but all good friends come to those who wait!

This year we have travelled to both Gamescom and Tokyo Game Show to demo Reanimal for the public and the reaction has surpassed all our wildest dreams, hearing the screams of both joy and terror as players worked together to survive has been music to our ears and is exactly what we had hoped for when concocting this idea of being Scared Together. So to all of you who gave of your time in Cologne and Tokyo, we give our most heartfelt thanks. It’s that kind of reception that makes the many years of hard work worth it. Just about!

As the release of the full game hoves into view, we would like to take this opportunity to announce to you here today that pre-orders are now open! All pre-orders of Reanimal unlock a pair of exclusive masks – Foxhead and Muttonhead – which can be used by either character to make your travails in this hellish world a bit more fun, or to blind you to their horrors!

As a studio that cut its teeth making hats and costumes for LittleBigPlanet, it feels strangely appropriate to be back here all these years later talking about the masks of Reanimal. Those of you who have already played the Reanimal demo will know, our latest range of headwear has gone to a much darker place! Yes, gone are the days of donning your silliest hat to gambol with carefree abandon through a world of happiness and creativity. Reanimal is a wildly different beast, it is a world of loss, violence and being scared together, a birthday cake hat would ruin everything!

At Tarsier, we try to make our worlds as rich and full of character as possible, where the story lives as much in the world around you as it does in what our characters say and do. It’s both fun and rewarding to pay attention to the little things, filling the background with details that tell us more about the world we’re in and the world we came from. Masks and costumes fall into this category too. Decorating the head or obscuring the face needn’t always be a meaningless act, and in many cases the mask (or the reason for it) is as much a part of the story as the person behind it.

The process of creating masks for Reanimal begins in much the same way as in past games, the artists begin sketching ideas around the core themes that we explore in the game and then iterating these until they hit that elusive Tarsier Quality Bar™. The Foxhead and Muttonhead masks resonated especially well because they had that bestial flavour that we were looking for; while their predator/prey characterisations quietly reiterate the game’s thematic undercurrents. They felt like a fitting pair to release as exclusives, as they come with plenty of baggage, just like our protagonists.

So, while out looking for your friends, even though you may dread to do so, it is worth exploring the world around you to see what secrets might be lying around. There are extra story snippets, hidden morsels of lore, easter eggs; and, of course, some of the most unpleasant masks we’ve ever created. We can’t guarantee that wearing them will keep you safe from what lies ahead, but you will at least look like you belong here!

Mafia: The Old Country’s Free Ride update launches November 20

Mafia: The Old Country’s Free Ride update launches November 20

Mafia: The Old Country’s Free Ride update launches November 20 https://ift.tt/Nkn72Mq

Mafia: The Old Country‘s depiction of 1900s Sicily is teeming with immersive detail and dangerous encounters. With the new Free Ride Update, the developers at Hangar 13 are giving players even more freedom to explore and survive the Valle Dorata’s criminal underworld.

See all the additions included in the Free Ride Update via the trailer below, then read on for insights from Associate Design Director Josh Zammit about this free update for owners of Mafia: The Old Country.

Mafia: The Old Country’s Free Ride update launches November 20

How does Mafia: The Old Country’s Free Ride mode call back to, or differ from, past Free Ride modes?

Free Ride is a callback to the original Mafia’s Free Ride Extreme, as well as the Free Ride mode we shipped in Mafia: Definitive Edition. It’s a collection of Challenges separate from the main story that give players chances to revisit the world in a more self-guided way. Mafia: The Old Country’s Free Ride mode will be slightly different from previous titles, yet familiar to returning fans all the same.

This time, we’ve constructed several kinds of repeatable Challenges—including combat, stealth, and different race types—in a variety of new and familiar locations. Completing Challenges will earn you the Dinari in-game currency to spend on the new outfits, charms, weapons, and vehicles unlocked by progressing through this content (as well as on items unlocked via the campaign). We’ve also included a number of other fresh and exciting features for players to sink their teeth into, and I hope fans enjoy them.

What’s the first thing you’d suggest players to do when they enter Free Ride mode?

There’s a lot to explore in this update, so players will have plenty of potential starting points. But I’m excited for them to experience the Valle Dorata in the most immersive way possible, and to me, that’s First-Person Driving. The first thing I’d do is spawn my fastest car from the garage, turn on the First-Person Driving camera, and just joyride. The new Photo Mode is another much-requested feature I think players are going to love. So get out there, find some action and beautiful vistas, and take amazing screenshots to share with friends.

Which pieces of content are you personally most excited about?

We’re super proud of everything the team has achieved, so I find it hard to pick one that I’m most excited about. I love the races; it’s a ton of fun to drive around our world at high speed in the amazing old cars. There’s loads of technical corners, and the better you get, the more satisfying they are to navigate.

The Combat Challenges are great as well. Standoffs push your limits when it comes to openly engaging enemies, and Assassinations are fun to experiment with until you nail that perfect run. There is one piece of content I think players are going to find especially intriguing and unexpected, though I don’t want to spoil it. Keep an eye out for notes in Enzo’s apartment—one may end up revealing something cool to investigate.

Beyond extra Challenges and other added content, how does this update enhance one’s experience of the main campaign?

I’ve already mentioned First-Person Driving because it really hits differently, and that’s equally true during the story. Driving around with Cesare in first person is great fun, especially in Chapter 7. It adds to the immersion and feels like living in that moment with your best friend.

Cinema Siciliano is another fantastic way to experience Mafia: The Old Country. We’ve gone out of our way to make it feel like you’re playing a genuine piece of classic Italian cinema. The visual treatment is stunning and it feels like you’re experiencing a black-and-white movie shot on an old-school sound stage, while the vintage-sounding audio convincingly brings the whole thing together.

We’ve also added Classic Difficulty, adding a new degree of challenge and raising the stakes higher, making for even more reason to take another crack at Enzo’s journey.

On top of that, all the new items you can earn by playing Free Ride will be usable in the main story campaign.

For new players, all of these elements will be present from the start, and having them as options throughout the game is going to be awesome. I’d recommend playing through on one of the original difficulties first, but if you’re confident in your skills—or just want to get punished—Classic puts them to the ultimate test.

How does First-Person Driving change the feel of exploration?

Though it’s something the team always wanted to include, this is the first time we’ve officially supported first-person driving in the franchise. We’re massive driving fans, so it was important to get the details in the cars right.

In terms of how it impacts exploration, it obviously changes the way you see things as you drive around immersed more firmly in Enzo’s shoes. I’ve spent many hours traversing the Valle Dorata with it now, and still stop to marvel at details I rarely noticed while zooming around in our classic third-person view. Tackling races in first person offers another new way to test your abilities, as dust and smoke from other cars add an intense and exhilarating perspective that the detached camera can’t easily convey.

How does Free Ride mode make use of the game’s map in ways that the main game didn’t or couldn’t?

We want players to explore the world in a freeform way, and Free Ride turns it into an expansive hub where you’ll find and access various Challenges by travelling around, unlocking Hitching Posts, and meeting contacts. Challenges are instanced and accessed via these contacts, and doing so will place you into a combat location or special world state.

These combat encounters reuse mission locations, so once you’ve played the corresponding story chapter and unlocked a Challenge in Free Ride, you’ll get to re-experience areas in new ways. Races happen out in the world and we’ve placed them along less-traveled paths, so it should be fun seeing parts of the map you may have previously passed by.

Of course, there may be new places to explore too, but that’s something you’ll have to discover for yourself…

Mafia: The Old Country’s Free Ride Update is available November 20, free for all PlayStation 5 players. If you haven’t picked up the game yet, PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers can try it via a Game Trial beginning Friday, November 21.

Get a taste of Neon Inferno boss fights ahead of this week’s PS5 & PS4 launch https://ift.tt/yWjErUL

Our hybrid side-scroller and gallery-shooter Neon Inferno launches on PS5 & PS4 this Thursday, November 20. Rendered in beautiful pixel art and backed by an evocative soundtrack, Neon Inferno is a stylish, modern 2D action experience with cyberpunk flair. As you play either as Angelo Morano or Mariana Vitti, you’ll battle through the streets, blasting, deflecting, and slicing your way through your enemies, using multiple upgrades and weapon options to shift a city-wide conflict in your favor.

Today, we’re giving you a taste of the action with a first look at three mini-bosses that’ll put your skills to the test as you ride a jet-ski through a flooded city scene.

In this dystopian New York City, the yearly flash-floods have transformed the streets of Inner Manhattan into canals, and, after receiving orders from your superiors to eliminate an important informant, you’ll find yourself coming face-to-face with three challenging mini-bosses as you enter its West Village district on jet-ski, heedlessly rushing into the storm.

Immediately you encounter several hyper-militarized NYPD officers in hot pursuit, coming at you from all sides in both foreground and background. Luckily, they can each be taken out in just one shot.

The NYPD will also send in autonomous drones of two varieties. The first model of drone fires glowing green bullets, which you can easily deflect back to destroy their source machine. But the second model drops deadly missiles on top of you, and these must be avoided entirely.

During and between all of this, obstacles might appear in the background, and you must contend with these as well. You’ll see a warning icon right before an obstacle comes onscreen, so react in time and switch lanes on your jet-ski to avoid crashing.

The Leviathan

Their standard protocols having failed, the NYPD sends in the first of our three menaces: the “Leviathan”, a highly-armored submarine outfitted with two heavy cannons! The smaller of the two typically fires pulsing rounds which can’t be deflected, but it can also shoot green ones if and when its barrel starts to, well, glow green. Get your timing right and deflect back any green bullets to deal even more damage!

Like with most other enemies, you can shoot at the Leviathan while it’s in the background, but its cannons still track you even from a distance! The larger cannon can fire orange spherical projectiles which explode onto the water, breaking into two smaller orbs that you must jump off your jet-ski to avoid. Alternatively it may fire another type of projectile, a blue one, which breaks into three smaller projectiles in three different directions. So pay attention to the color of each projectile, and above all, pay attention to whenever the Leviathan dives underwater and where it resurfaces. You don’t want to get caught off-guard if this behemoth reappears from right under you!

Dreadnought

The second menace is the flying “Dreadnought”, an airship constructed by the corporate mercenary group Pangaea. The Dreadnought features many different types of cannons right along its hull. Dodge its larger cannons’ pulsing red-and-blue projectiles, while deflecting its smaller cannons’ green bullets right back at their mothership. On top of this bullet ballet, you’ll also have to avoid the laser beams which the machine fires downwards from time to time!

While this particular miniboss could seem trivial, since all you really have to do is shoot up, your positioning is also key, and this makes things quite tricky. Pay attention whenever the Dreadnought’s laser beams are about to fire, and be careful not to get caught in a bullet volley while avoiding said lasers. And if you think you can just hang out on the left side of the screen and cruise through this fight, you’ll find plenty of grenades dropped right on top of you from the airship’s sliding hatch.

The Hydrosnake

As the Dreadnought goes through its destruction sequence, that aforementioned hatch opens one last time to release our third and last menace: the “Hydrosnake”, an unmanned yet highly-lethal killing machine that will stop at nothing to annihilate you. It dives in and out of the water with all the skill of an Olympian, launching itself into the air as it pummels you with projectile fire. Like with the Leviathan, pay attention whenever the Hydrosnake dives into the water, and closely track where it comes up. The Hydrosnake might even launch itself completely offscreen and dive back directly onto your position, so make sure to watch out for any warning icons: They might save your life!

You’ll also want to keep an eye on the Hydrosnake’s primary laser, whose status is indicated by a pulsing light at the snake’s red “eye”. This laser beam drags across your entire lane, whether you’re in the foreground or the background, so you’ll want to dodge to the opposite lane before it fires. Thankfully, the entire body of the Hydrosnake is susceptible to your blaster-fire, so keep on shooting and you’ll prevail.

But what’s the best part about defeating these three minibosses? This entire flooded city scene is only the start of this epic mission. You’ll have plenty to look forward to even after your victory – provided you are indeed victorious – with more new, unique, and hand-crafted challenges to come.

Think you have what it takes to defeat these three mechanical monsters? Battle the Leviathan, the Dreadnought, and the Hydrosnake in Neon Inferno – available for PlayStation 4 and 5 on November 20, 2025. And if you can’t wait? Wishlist Neon Inferno now!
